Simplifying complexity

Schools are complex adaptive systems.

Schools emerge overtime from the numerous interactions of those involved: staff, students, families, community members... In this regard conversations are particularly important.

That is, schools are continually constructed (and re-constructed) by the interactions of the people involved.

Well developed "rules" can help shape and simplify the actions and interactions of those involved.

Examples:

3 Basic School Rules
  1. No harm (to self, others or property)
  2. No disruption (to work of play)
  3. No offence ( to other members of the school community)
Having a clear, shared understanding and agreement that these 3 basic rules apply to everyone all the time makes it easier to respond constructively when things go wrong

When things go wrong
  1. Contain situation that has gone wrong
  2. Repair any harm done (if possible)
  3. Reduce the likelihood of the situation recurring
